Baby Zebra Comforts Orphaned Rhino Calf And Helps Her Heal

Daisy and Modjadji would never have crossed paths in the wild.

The juvenile zebra and rhino have become unexpected friends at the Care For Wild Rhino Sanctuary, where they are supporting each other’s recovery.

In South Africa’s Kruger National Park, rangers discovered Daisy suffering and alone at the beginning of December. Daisy was barely a few hours old and quite frail, so her rescuers flew her to the critical care section of the refuge. Daisy required 24-hour care and feeding in addition to additional therapies to strengthen her immune system and support her in keeping her body temperature stable.

Daisy wasn’t the only animal newborn at the hospital, either.

According to Louwhen Bowker, the media liaison at Care For Wild Rhino Sanctuary, “Modjadji was brought to the sanctuary’s ICU at the end of November after being found lifeless and hardly breathing on the reserve following severe rains and storms.” Modjadji was believed to be little older than a week old.

After spending a month together, Modjadji and Daisy resemble one other more. Modjadji follows Daisy everywhere she goes.

They snuggle at night, which provides Daisy security and comfort, according to Bowker. To avoid having too much human interaction with Daisy, “[Modjadji] is a companion who can be with her 24/7.”
