Couple Gives Up Their Retirement Plans To Rescue And Care For Abused And Neglected Horses

Larry and Peggy Neaves had not exactly planned on taking care of sick, abandoned and abused horses for their retirement. They had intended on traveling. But Peggy told Texas Country Reporter, “We don’t really have that desire now. This seems much more worthwhile for us to spend our money on.”

Each of the 18 horses they’ve rescued have absolutely heartbreaking stories. “There’s always someone who wants to abuse something defenseless,” explains Larry. The former FBI agent and his wife, a past inspector with U.S. Customs, have seen their fair share of human cruelty in their careers, but they were unfamiliar with horses. In fact, up until a few years ago the couple had never been around horses at all!

Despite their lack of experience, their rehabilitation techniques and the love and attention they lavish on the horses has earned them praise from horse lovers and veterinarians alike. It’s a busy retirement, but the Neaves wouldn’t have it any other way.
