Baby Koala Gets A Little Cast After Breaking His Leg Falling From A Felled Tree

Joey is a newborn koala that was transported to the Weribee Open Range Zoo in Melbourne, Australia, last month after she and her mother survived a fall from a downed tree on a Victorian bluegum plantation.

Joey weighed less than a kilo and was just 150 days old, which meant he was still in his mother’s pouch or on the verge of sticking his head out.

His survival is nothing short of a miracle. She was cared after by veterinarians 24 hours a day, was fed a marsupial milk substitute by syringe, and is currently on the mend.

Veterinary nurse Jess Rice, according to UNILAD, said:

“When they gave her to us, she was quite fragile.”

They used a small cast to mend his bones after an x-ray revealed that his right arm was shattered.

Jess purchased the baby a koala stuffed animal to make him feel like he had a mother figure.

Jesus declared:

“At that age, bonding and company are quite crucial. Toys are frequently given to young koalas to provide comfort and to teach them how to hang by their fur like their mother.”

Joey is being cared for by an animal caretaker and will stay there for several months until she is completely recovered, following which she will be released back into the wild.

Koalas are thought to have a life expectancy of roughly 12 years, according to the Australian Koala Foundation, but they are threatened by habitat degradation, with at least 4,000 koalas killed by automobiles each year.
