Some good folks just rescued a dying puppy from the streets; he had been mistreated and was in critical condition. Lauren learned about the story on social media and wanted to rescue the cat, but she wasn’t sure she could because of his condition.

Lauren explained to Boredpanda:

“On Christmas Eve, the Good Samaritan who found Lainey and her brother shared images of them on Facebook. We felt we had to do something because he couldn’t stay with them.”

In the end, she opted to retain Lainey, giving her a foster home and doing everything she could to help her heal. According to rescuers, Lainey’s condition was bad, she smelled bad, and she was bleeding all over the sofa, but that didn’t stop Lauren.

Lainey was sent to the vet for tests, and she was diagnosed with demodectic mange and secondary illnesses as a consequence of the results.

Demodectic mange is caused by Demodex canis, a tiny mite that is quite common in dogs and is shaped like a cigar. These mites exist on the skin of dogs and do not harm them, but some dogs can control them by contracting the illness.

It mainly affects puppies under the age of two, who are more prone to have a weakened immune system. This type of mite is frequently passed on to pups by their mothers after birthing, and they stay in the hair follicles without inflicting any damage.

“She was with us for four months.” She was on antibiotics and ivermectin every day for four months. We also placed coconut oil in her meals, rubbed it to her skin, and bathed her twice a week in medicated water. We also tried to keep her stress to a minimum, as demodex thrive on it.”

Fortunately, Lainey was never alone in her struggle; she had Lauren’s unwavering support and willingness to assist her with whatever.

Thanks to their affection and essential care, the dog evolved and regained her true form over time. Lainey was blossoming into the lovely dog she is, and fortunately, her life had more to give her than grief.
