Until It’s Bottle Time, Baby Rhino Snuggles Under His Blanket

Kitui is a newborn black rhino that rests every night under his blanket.

Because his blind mother was unable to defend her previous pups from predators, Kitui is being raised by the compassionate keepers at Lewa, and black rhinos are becoming increasingly scarce. Wanjiku Kinuthia of Lewa told The Dodo that he is one of Kenya’s estimated 640 severely endangered black rhinos. “Every single person plays a role in preserving the species’ survival.”

Kitui will be released back into the wild when he is 3 or 4 years old. Until then, Kitui is a master at living in the now.

Kitui sleeps in an enclosure close to his keepers’ sleeping quarters, and they keep an eye on him throughout the night. He appears to be entirely at ease under his blanket and in his hay bed.

When his keeper comes over with a food, he gets up.
