The Coat Of A Wild Horse Bears The Most Unique Markings

The state of Oregon in the United States has the greatest population of wild horses. The total number of horses reaches over 4,000, but there is one horse in particular that stands out due to its unique markings: Cirrus, a brown mare.

This wild horse has a big white marking on one side that resembles a miniature horse, complete with a white mane and brown eye.

In 2018, a representative of the American Wild Horse Campaign (AWHC) was watching four mustangs gallop when he noticed a mare with a horse in her coat.

Grace Kuhn, the AWHC’s Communications Director, told The Dodo:

“We were blown away when he gave us the photographs; the similarity of a horse on his neck was incredible.” It was such a lovely and wonderful sight that the horse’s white markings flowed with her as she walked, complete with a part of floating white mane.’

Cirrus is one of the 846 wild horses captured by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in 2018 as part of efforts to reduce the wild horse population; animals can lose their families and even their lives as a result of this tragic procedure.

Cirrus was a member of the American Wild Horse Campaign, which works to preserve horses, and they decided to act to save the mare.

Grace added:

“Cirrus represents what is happening to America’s wild horses: freedom and loss, beauty and sorrow, all encapsulated in one horse.”

The AWHC worked with Montgomery Creek Ranch, a rescue horse sanctuary in northern California, to locate her. La yegua arrived to Montgomery Creek Ranch, where she will live with other rescued horses.

Cirrus is around ten years old, and despite the fact that her life has been saved, her caregivers describe her as calm and kind.

Montgomery Creek Ranch co-founder Ellie Phipps Price said:

“Although she has an opinion and goes a bit ‘crazy’ when something she doesn’t like happens, she’s measured, careful, and even a little curious, she has a dominating presence and is extremely expressive,” says the author.

Cirrus’ trust is something that the sanctuary staff works hard to win every day. The mare has become more responsive over time, allowing her to be given hay and softly touched on the nose.

Price explains:

“We think that, with her famous brands and overall presence, she might serve as an ambassador to assist us better communicate the narrative of what is happening to America’s wild horses across the West,” said the group.

The shrine’s main objective is to make Cirrus extremely happy; if the mare is feeling under a lot of strain from the handlers, this may be lessened. More than 200 rescued Mustang horses and donkeys roam the 2,000-acre Montgomery Creek Ranch refuge.

In this video, you may see what a Cirrus day looks like:

Cirrus will be part of a big herd at Montgomery Creek Ranch and will be allowed to run freely. If you want to learn more about the conservation of wild horses in the United States, go to the American Wild Horse Campaign’s website.
