It’s Amazing How Many Animals Are Being Saved By This Simple Idea

Rich Mason, a wildlife scientist in Maryland, received a worried call from a buddy who had recently put a pool in his yard.

Mason told The Dodo, “Because I’m a wildlife scientist, I’m the one who gets contacted when friends have snakes in their garage, that type of stuff.” “Every day, this buddy was removing dead frogs from their pool… “I was taken aback.”

Even Mason had no idea how dangerous pools might be for frogs. “I began doing some investigation,” he explained. Mason discovered numerous pool owners seeking help on how to prevent frogs and other creatures from drowning in their pools on the internet. The frogs appeared to be able to readily jump in and swim around, but they couldn’t get out. “However, there was no actual investigation on this… I was somewhat taken aback.”

People have also discovered mice and chipmunks drowning in their swimming pools. Mason explained that “pretty much every animal that travels through a suburban area might fall into a pool at some point.”

Mason discovered that there are millions of pools in the United States, with an estimated 100,000 new pools being created each year. There’s a lot of opportunity for small wild lives to be lost in that scenario.

So Mason decided to take action: “OK, let’s see if we can come up with anything to address this problem,” he says. With some waste foam in hand, he went to his garage and pulled up his sewing machine.

He constructed a first model and had his buddies test it. Then there was another. Then there was another. Mason explained, “I bought additional foam and constructed more devices and gathered feedback from other folks.” “It was all about helping animals,” says the author.

Because most frogs and animals are more active at night, the best way to determine if the early FrogLog was working was to look for any little bodies in the mornings — as well as the pools were becoming increasingly clear.

Mason began producing a few hundred of these gadgets each year in his garage for individuals who wished to save animals from their swimming pools. FrogLog eventually became more official, allowing it to assist creatures all around the world.

And it’s a hit among animal lovers. “The good news is that we’ve had a lot of positive reaction from individuals, including some pretty impassioned emails proclaiming this to be the finest thing since sliced bread,” Mason added.

A Connecticut resident stated, “It was such a comfort not to see dead frogs in the pool’s filter basket or floating on the top.” “I also had a resident bullfrog that lived happily in the pool, would rest on the FrogLog, and use it to enter and exit the water anytime he pleased.”

One lady from Ontario commented, “I had my concerns when my husband purchased this, but then I saw a tiny Eastern fox snake utilize it to get out of our pool.” This snake belongs to a threatened species.”
