A Lonely Little Coyote Pup, A Caring Cop Goes Above and Beyond

A Massachusetts State Police trooper did just that this week, rescuing a terrified baby coyote pup who’d been discovered alone on a major highway.

When trooper Carlo Mastromattei noticed the puppy’s mother was nowhere to be found, he contacted Lisa Cutting, owner of Ocean View Kennels, for assistance in securely removing the animal from the dangerous situation.

The puppy was no longer in danger, but Mastromattei’s good deeds didn’t stop there.

All neighboring animal rehabilitation centers appeared to be closed at that late hour. So, to keep the young coyote safe until daylight, the trooper decided to go above and above his call of duty.

Mastromattei took the puppy home with him, where he and his girlfriend kept him warm and fed all night.

Mastromattei took the coyote to the Tufts Wildlife Clinic the next day for a checkup. He was fortunately determined to be in good health, thanks in large part to the trooper’s timely rescue.

The young coyote has since been placed in the care of a wildlife rehabilitator, according to the Massachusetts State Police. He’ll hopefully keep growing strength until he’s old enough to be released back into the wild and enjoy his life as nature intended.

Those engaged in the pup’s rescue are receiving well-deserved thanks from police officials, who stated in a Facebook post:

“The Department expresses its heartfelt gratitude to Trooper Mastromattei, his fiancée, Ocean View Kennels, and Tufts University for their loving care of this lovely little creature.”
